Page 1 of 2 The Legion of Good Will participates actively in the United Nations (UN) since 1994. It was initially recognized by the Department of Public Information (DPI) and, since 1999, received general consultative status at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The LGW is also member of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in consultative relationship with the United Nations (CONGO).
The general consultative status allows the Legion of Good Will to contribute towards the programs and work objectives of the UN, acting as a technical expert and consultant for the intergovernmental process of the United Nations. By this, it can collaborate with the United Nations executing plans of action, programs and declarations approved by the UN. It can also attend the ECOSOC meetings, make oral interventions and present written declarations concerning the subjects enclosed in the UN’s agenda, besides being able to suggest new topics to be submitted for appreciation. Organizations like the LGW are also invited to participate in the international conferences convoked by the United Nations. In September 2000, in a meeting where worldwide leaders were present, 8 specific goals were stipulated that will guide the efforts of all the participants and that regard the sustainable development and the fight against poverty. As a participant organization, the Legion of Good Will understood these objectives as fundamental, supporting them through its socioeducational Programs: 1. Erradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2. Achieve universal primary education; 3. Promote gender equality and empower woman; 4. Reduce child mortality; 5. Improve maternal health; 6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; 7. Ensure environmental sustainability; 8. Develop a global partnership for development. The LGW has widely supported this worldwide campaign by means of its socioeducational actions and, more recently, by the articulation of other social actors, promoting meetings and spreading information in dozens of Brazilian cities and in Latin America. From such activities the Solidary Society Network was created, and has contributed, in a regional way, for a bigger intersectorial action in favor of the sustainable and integrated development. Annually, the LGW presents the results of these actions to heads of State, ministers and High Commissariat, which meet, every year, during the High Level Segment of the ECOSOC (foto do HLS 2005). Besides the role of mobilizing the civil society around the themes of interest of the UN, the LGW also participates, in New York, as member of the NGO Committee on Spirituality, Values and Global Concerns in the United Nations. The objective is to contribute for an open and practical debate on the importance of the Ecumenical Spirituality on global development, an idea defended by the LGW since its origins. By this, several conferences and events inside UN headquarters have attracted the attention of worldwide authorities for the subject of great value.
