With the objective of spreading good practices in order to attain the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs)—established in the year 2000 by the United Nations —, particularly the second goal (to achieve quality primary education for everyone), the Legion of Good Will (LGW) conducts from March 10 to April 1, the 8th Solidary Society Network Multi-stakeholder Forum – 5th Innovation Fair in support to the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six main organs of the UN. The event is aimed at representatives from civil society organizations, companies, governments and universities, and it is focused on discussing the theme “Education for global development: a view beyond the intellect”.
The meetings will take place in Asuncion (Paraguay); in La Paz (Bolivia); in Rio de Janeiro and Brasília (Brazil); in Buenos Aires (Argentina); and in Montevideo (Uruguay). There will also be workshops in the Brazilian cities of Porto Alegre, Salvador and São Paulo.

It is worth pointing out that the Legion of Good Will counts with the support from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA) and from the United Nations Information Center for Brazil (UNIC-Rio) to hold this forum. The outcome of these meetings will be presented by the LGW through reports and displayed by cultural and photo exhibitions and videos at the ECOSOC’s High-Level Segment meeting, which will take place in June and July 2011, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Solidary Society Network
Under the banner of solidarity, it seeks to bring together the work developed by organizations from different social sectors in order to contribute towards the achievement of the MDGs. For that, it organizes meetings and encourages joint actions towards common causes. This network has as members: associations; foundations; cooperatives; technical support, international cooperation and class entities; religious movements; federal, state and municipal governments; private companies; and universities.

A reference in education, the Legion of Good Will has a network of schools and community centers spread across many cities in Brazil and abroad. In these places socioeducational programs are carried out offering high quality pedagogical material, developing the intellectual potential of children and adolescents living in a condition of social vulnerability. In these units it is applied the pedagogical proposal devised by the LGW’s President, educator José de Paiva Netto, who has been stressing for decades the need for a view beyond the intellect on aspects involving educational themes. This educational proposal of the LGW’s leader consists of the Pedagogy of Affection (destined to children up to 10 years of age) and the Ecumenical Citizen Pedagogy (for individuals starting from the age of 11). The teaching of ethical, ecumenical and spiritual values is allied to the school curriculum content, because the objective is to make the students prepared to exercise the complete citizenship, being aware of their rights and, especially, of their duties. Under the motto “This is where one studies and where Brain and Heart are formed”, the schools of the Legion of Good Will have been obtaining significant results with students from all ages, highlighting the continuous studies, zero dropout rate and environments free from situations of violence and aggression.
