Early that morning, he visited the work maintained by the Legion of Good Will (LGW) in the pacified community of Providência. There, the Organization is present with its Living and Learning Program, which contributes towards the development of people and families with a low income. Another successful initiative is the support offered by the LGW to low-income children belonging to the community who are afforded the chance to participate in karate classes as part of the campaign Sport is Life, not violence!. During the visit, athletes demonstrated some of the sport’s techniques to the UN’s representative.

The work of the LGW in the pacified community of Providência is the result of a partnership between the Organization, the Super Radio Brazil – 940 AM (a broadcasting station of the Good Will Communication) and the government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which, through Rio’s State Secretary of Sports and Leisure, supports the work within the project Rio 2016.

During the visit, the President of the Superintendence of Sports of the State of Rio de Janeiro highlighted the importance of the visit from a representative of the UN to the community. “Today, not only SUDERJ, the State Secretary of Sports and Leisure and, especially, the LGW, a great partner and ally in all these initiatives, work so that the community can increasingly be more united so that we can export this experience to other communities. (...) For this reason, it is important that not only the State, but private initiative as well, all think together to offer to these children more and better opportunities. (...) It is interesting that when the State sometimes can’t be present at a given moment, the LGW comes and calls us, and vice-versa. Then, together, we advance in all [areas]. This is really fantastic.”

The successful partnership between the LGW and other organizations involved in the projects of the pacified community was remembered by the Commander of the Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) of Providência, Captain Glauco Schorcht. “It’s a pleasure to once again be part of this promising partnership with the LGW. Soon, it’ll be a year since we began and we can already observe many changes in the community, especially among youngsters and children that take part in the projects that are offered. I’m really thankful for this partnership we have with the LGW! As soon as I arrived, the LGW came along right away and proposed this partnership concerning the karate classes, where we were able to show to these children that they can have a better future. The children were able to participate in competitions outside the State: one in São Paulo and another in Salvador. It was possible to show them that, through sports, one can achieve real changes.”

Mr. Andrei Abramov, after his visit to the UPP, followed on to the José de Paiva Netto Educational Center in Del Castilho, in Rio’s northern district. His agenda included a visit to the LGW’s educational unit and a talk regarding the theme of the Second Millennium Goal: to achieve universal primary education, during the 8th Solidary Society Network Multi-Stakeholder Forum – 5th Innovation Fair, in support to the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
