Children from the community of Providência participate in one of the activities developed by the LGW in partnership with the UPP.

Among the many challenges for staging the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the involvement of the population in the atmosphere of sports is fundamental. Therefore, the initiative relies to a great extent on the participation of organized civil society. And the Legion of Good Will (LGW) is one of the articulating agents in this project, in partnership with the Government of Rio de Janeiro and community leaders.

- New building and more investments

It is no coincidence that the LGW has had a successful story with its schools, Community Centers and, more recently, with the actions developed in the community of Providência (close to Central do Brasil), where a Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) was created, whose mission is to encourage the integration of slums into the rest of the metropolis.

In that community, the Organization has already been developing educational activities and several types of services, organizing health and citizenship - collective work through its Living and Learning program. With the creation of the Providência UPP in 2010 and the voluntary work carried out by Commander Hernani Barbosa, from Rio’s Military Police, who taught karate to boys and girls in that community, the LGW gave a helping hand to this course with its educational methodology embracing the cause. At once, it managed to obtain the first 70 kimonos. Slowly, the project began to grow, reaching 120 members; by the end of last year, there were already 200 children and young people enrolled.

Aside from the growing involvement of children with sports, the first results of this action came through winning championships and medals. Aside from Providência, the LGW plans to implement its social activities in six more communities up to the end of this year: Turano, Macacos, Formiga, Ladeira dos Tabajaras, Salgueiro and Borel. All of them will receive programs in accordance with studies performed regarding the reality of each location. The activity of the Organizations’s team in each of these places will be undertaken in partnership with community spaces, schools, district associations, and clubs, within the LGW’s Living and Learning program.

All the work carried out by the Legion of Good Will is accomplished thanks to the financial or volunteer help of Brazilians and foreigners alike. You can also be a part of this movement. Join the Good Will team!
