The 15th anniversary of the educational complex belonging to the Legion of Good Will in the city of Rio de Janeiro, celebrated on March 2, 2011, is a landmark of the growth of the Organization’s actions in the city. Until last year, the activities of the José de Paiva Netto Educational Center and the LGW’s Community Center for Social Assistance were held in the building located on Av. Dom Hélder Câmara, 3.059, in Del Castilho. Now, in that building, only the school remains with increased activities, while the Community Center is now working in a neighboring address on Rua Pires de Carvalho, 216, where new spaces are offered to the community with improved equipment for the development of the programs and projects that are carried out.
At the location, a space has also been set up to receive volunteers during the mobilization of the campaigns that the Legion of Good Will periodically promotes or even those of a more immediate type, such as the S.O.S Disaster and the LGW’s Permanent Christmas – Jesus, our Daily Bread!. This last one, as a matter of fact, achieved unheard of results in 2010: more than 1.2 million kilos of non-perishable food items delivered to families living under social risk situations throughout the country. Another example of the power of volunteering was the response obtained in just a few days from the Brazilian population that banded together with the LGW in distributing more than 544 tons of donations to the victims of the rains in the mountain range region of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
In the Community Center, three other great programs are also developed, which unfold into individual actions and projects according to the reality of each location. This set of initiatives all represent a significant increase in the social care that had already benefited more than 2,000 families only in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
