LGW is appointed as reference in education in UN event Print E-mail

On the first week of July, the Legion of Good Will (LGW) participated in the High-Level Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), in the Palais des Nations, at the UN headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. During the meeting, authorities and representatives of member countries will focused on “Implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to education”. The event’s proposal was to bring together actions and suggestions that may accelerate global advances in the educational area, such as new initiatives and partnerships.

In Geneva, Mr. Nikhil Seth (L), Director of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA) of ECOSOC; Dr. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General at the United Nations, receives the Good Will Education magazine from the hands of the LGW representative Danilo Parmegiani.
Since the first day of the event, the United Nations member countries delegations received the LGW’s recommendations on the theme of the event, translated by the UN to its six official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish). On the opportunity, the Legion of Good Will also prepared a special publication for the event with innovative proposals for formal and informal education and the eradication of poverty towards the development of nations: the GOOD WILL Education magazine (available in English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish).

The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-moon, when received the publication of the Legion of Good Will, and while skimming through the magazine and saw a picture of his last visit to Brazil, highlighting the quickness of the publication. After getting to know more about the work developed by the Organization, mainly in Brazil, he thanked and said in Portuguese: “Muito obrigado!” [Thank you very much!].

During the official programme of the event, the Legion of Good Will was invited to represent the civil society in a ministerial meeting, promoted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and by the World Bank, taking its fraternal recommendations for improving international education policies, based on its experience of more than 60 years promoting Education with Ecumenical Spirituality.

On July 6, the LGW delivered an oral statement during the general debate presenting to the international authorities present at the conference its fraternal recommendations on education. The speech was translated into the official languages of the United Nations and broadcasted live by UN TV to the whole world.

On the same day, the Brazilian Organization also organized a thematic panel entitled “Quality and equitable education: a multi-stakeholder challenge to achieve the MDGs”. The speakers of this conference were: Chief of Permanent Mission of Brazil to the United Nations Office in Geneva, H.E. Ambassador Mrs. Maria Nazareth Farani Azevêdo; Dr. Andrei Abramov, Chief of the NGO Branch of the UN/DESA; and the educator Suelí Periotto, who addressed “Overcoming poverty through a quality education: forming the individual in its entirety for a Solidary Society”. On the occasion, Ms. Periotto represented the Legion of Good Will in the panel, and explained about the educational methodology successfully applied by the Organization in its schools in Brazil and in other South American countries, and which has resulted in numerous success stories for it recommends that educators “see beyond the intellect”, so they may form individuals aware of their responsibilities to transform the world into a better place.
