Initiative benefits children and teenagers with uniforms and school supplies

In the past year, the speed of Brazil’s growth was twice the rate recorded in European countries. It could become the fifth largest economy in the world before 2015. But there is still a lot to be improved if the country wants to consolidate this growth and eradicate the social contrasts that exist. An example of this is education.

According to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP) [Anísio Teixeira National Institute of Educational Studies and Research] for every 100 students who enter school in the first grade, only 5 conclude their primary education. Among the causes for dropping out are: the distant location of schools and the lack of school transportation and school supplies. This is where the Legion of Good Will (LGW) comes in. With a background history going back 62 years, in January the organization began the 2012 edition of its campaign, A+ Child — Without Education there is no Future!. The purpose of this initiative is to collect funds for buying school supplies and uniforms for those families assisted by the Organization.

With this campaign the LGW is complementing the work carried out in its units, where it offers the support necessary so that children and adolescents can conclude their studies with quality, far from the streets or isolation, assisting families that are in a socially vulnerable situation, i.e. which suffer from poverty, violence, discrimination and other problems.

The school kits are composed in accordance with the age group of the students. Among the several items are: a pencil case, black and colored pencils, pens, a pencil sharpener, erasers, scissors, tubes of glue, gouache paints, notebooks, recycled writing paper, a ruler, a Portuguese dictionary and an educational game.



Educating with Ecumenical Spirituality
The basis and the differential of all the social and educational actions of the Legion of Good Will are its own teaching methodologies, the Pedagogy of Affection and the Ecumenical Citizen Pedagogy, which are used on a daily basis in the Organization’s own units. The proposal is based on the complete formation of the human being, considering its physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions, all of which are essential for building a truly solidary society. The result of this work could not be any different: the school has a zero drop-out rate.
