Check out our work at the United States The Legion of Good Will was officialized in the United States in 1986 and soon received the support of the North American, Hispanic and Brazilian volunteers and collaborators, living in this country. The first activities developed were the emergency programs — very often published in the North American press —, especially during the cold winter nights, when the famous LGW’s Charity Round eased the pain and the death risk of several homelesses, distributing warm clothing and hot soup. Check out in this edition two important activities developed in the USA: Cancer Prevention In partnership with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), the LGW has helped women and men over 40 years of age with preventive lectures and cancer exams. The work is part of the program S.A.V.E Men & Women and it contemplates, to all diagnosed cases, continuity of the treatment at the hospital. Peace and Good Will Garden The Peace and Good Will Garden is a project created by the LGW in the United Sates and it is based on fostering debates and culturalartistic activities in schools, hospitals and public places. The youth of the LGW encourage group games, involving physical activities, essay writing, painting, poetry and entertainment, making children and adolescents reject violence and search for creative ways to promote Peace. Recognition from the United Nations The Legion of Good Will participates actively in the UN since 1994, having been firstly recognized by the Department of Public Information (DPI). It is also member of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in consultative relationship with the United Nations (CONGO). Besides attesting the international relevance of its work, the general consultative status that the LGW has at ECOSOC allows it to contribute towards the programs and work objectives of the UN, acting as a technical expert and counselor for the intergovernmental process of the United Nations.
