New York/USA - June 30th marked the beginning of the High-Level Segment Meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council.
Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations, was represented by the UN Under-Secretary-General Dr. Sha Zukang. The Noble Peace Prize winner and Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Mr. Rajendra Pachauri, and scientist Nicholas Stern, author of the famous Stern Report, were two of the main lecturers present. The research developed by each one of them can be found in the article Eight Millennium Goals - Responsibility of all those endowed with common sense, written by the journalist and writer Paiva Netto, President of the Legion of Good Will (LGW), enclosed in the magazine Globalization of Fraternal Love.
After the opening ceremony, the UN Under-Secretary-General, who received the LGW’s publication, visited the booths of the ECOSOC Innovation Fair where organizations from civil society exhibited their most expressive international projects aligned with the theme of the event. At the LGW’s booth, Dr. Zukang congratulated the work that the Brazilian Organization accomplishes promoting ecological awareness in its educational program with Ecumenical Spirituality. The official picture of the Innovation Fair was taken in front of the LGW’s booth, gathering all the high-level delegation of the Council and representatives of International NGOs. At the LGW’s booth the participants of this conference and the international community were able to get information through the magazine Globalization of Fraternal Love, the informative Solidary Society Network and a pamphlet with the article Chief Seattle’s Letter, by the journalist and writer Paiva Netto.
At this same spot, a banner provided to the visitors a description of the large project on environmental education that the Legion of Good Will develops in its educational units, through several means of communication and the Solidary Society Network. They were also able to watch a video concerning the 2nd Forum of the Solidary Society Network Innovation Fair, held on March in eight cities of Latin America.
Due to the success of the LGW in the exhibition, the UN radio interviewed representatives of the Organization during the event. Journalist Mônica Valéria spontaneously looked for the LGW. She was very happy to see the booth and quickly sent a reporter there to interview the LGW’s team that served as the transmission’s spokesperson in the Portuguese language.
The Deputy of the NGO Section of the UN/DESA, Dr. Michele Fedoroff, also visited the LGW’s booth, where on the occasion she congratulated the work of the Organization. “I thank him [Paiva Netto] for organizing and building such a wonderful organization and having such a beautiful army of volunteers around him that are so efficient and so dedicated”, she pointed out.
