The heavy rains that hit the southern and southeastern regions of Brazil since the early days of 2010, left dozens of Brazilian cities in a state of calamity. The area hardest hit by the storms was Angra dos Reis (the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro). The city, which has accounted 53 victims, has again been battered by rains and strong winds on Tuesday, in the afternoon. According to the Municipal Civil Defense, the winds reached 88 kilometers per hour. However, there was no record of new landslides.
Another city that suffered damage because of the rains was São Luiz do Paraitinga, located in the Paraíba Valley, State of São Paulo. There, the level of the Paraitinga River rose more than eight meters. Thus, about 80% of the historic city was submerged.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul, whose cities had already been punished by the floods since the end of last year, is once again in a state of emergency. According to the Civil Defense, more than 2,800 people are homeless or displaced in the state in the 53 cities that are in an emergency situation. At least ten people died due to rain. Other two are still missing.
